Project Illustration
Some step-by-step illustrations in the process of making the project
Step 1: Made the Mesa city's 3d model
Design Tools: Blender, Rhino
We used GIS (geographic information science) plugin to access the google map data and shaped it into the 3D models. The models have 2 parts. The first one is Mesa's building and the second part is Mesa's road. According to our sketch, we used the Rhino software to cutting those models to the circle.
Step 2: Shaped the models
Design Tools: Touchdesigner
Import those models and use the sprinkle operator tool to make the road model into particles
Make Mesa's building model more aesthetic.
Step 3: Use of data
Design Tools: Touchdesigner
Import transportation data to Touchdesigner, then separated it into three parts: CAR, PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, and OTHERS.
Connected the data to the road particles numbers, and give them different colors. Each particle means 1k people. In this case, The number of particles means how many people have used this kind of transportation to commute.
Red: Car, truck, or van (drove alone, carpooled)
Yellow: Public transportation (bus, subway or elevated rail, light rail, streetcar or trolley, ferryboat)
Blue: Other (bicycle, walked, worked from home)
Step 4: Design the visualization
Made the visualization could give audiences an effective overview and aesthetic impression of transportation data.
Step 5: Make a showcase video
Design Tools: Adobe after effects, Adobe premiere
Future development plan
We believe this project is very meaningful and we want to explore it in the next step. We want to collect other cities' data and models, visualize them and compare that. We believe that will tell a very impressive story about the cities people lived in.
